 NCT History

In 1961, a group of women interested in theatre formed the Drama Department of the Newton Women's Club. In the spring of 1962, they produced a short religious play called “Promise of the Angels” for the women's club general meeting. The play was directed by Ann Krumm and the cast members were Liz Jones, Linda Campbell, Joy Faust, Louise Lasche and Laura Owens. In the spring of 1963, they decided to produce the play again and make it available to various groups for spring meetings. The money earned was put towards the beginnings of a community theatre. The play was staged about seven times, directed by Frances Murray and with Mary Wilson substituting for Joy Foust, and raised more than $100. This money was used to send letters to people who might be interested in forming a community theatre group. – Newton Daily News

Mission Statement

The Newton Community Theatre brings quality theatre productions to the communities of Jasper County, sharing talents and resources to make theatre a rewarding and educational experience for all. – December 18, 2017 board meeting minutes

Audition Policy

It is the policy of the Newton Community Theatre, Inc. to cast regardless of race, color or disability. Determined by the quality of the auditions, the director will cast the best choice for each role after everyone had the opportunity to audition. If invited to audition by a director, this does not guarantee that you will be cast. The Newton Community Theatre, Inc. does not pre-cast roles unless announced on the audition notice. In addition, on occasion, a cast might be expanded to accommodate a large turnout of performers. If after auditions the director believes that a particular role cannot be cast satisfactorily, other actors may be contacted for a second audition. – April 19, 1994 board meeting minutes
